What Reverse Osmosis Removes — and Where It Belongs

Reverse osmosis is the most thorough drinking-water treatment available for a home. It forces water through a semipermeable membrane with openings so fine they block dissolved solids at the molecular level — far more than carbon filtration alone can catch. The result is clean, flat-tasting water that rivals bottled, straight from your own tap.

A typical under-sink RO system runs water through several stages: a sediment pre-filter, one or more carbon filters, the RO membrane itself, and a final polishing filter; some systems add a remineralization stage to round out the taste. It’s the most common and affordable way to get RO water exactly where you use it — the kitchen sink and the refrigerator/ice maker.

RO works best as part of a system. A water softener installed upstream removes the hardness that would otherwise scale and shorten the life of the RO membrane, so the two are a natural pairing — soft water through the whole house, exceptional drinking water at the tap. For chlorine taste throughout the home, add whole-home carbon filtration.

Maintenance is light: the pre- and post-filters are changed roughly yearly and the membrane lasts several years, depending on your water and usage. We service every unit we install and can remind you when a filter change is due, so the water quality never quietly drifts.

Beyond taste, RO reduces a broad range of dissolved contaminants that carbon alone leaves behind — total dissolved solids, sodium (including the small amount a softener adds back), nitrates, and many others depending on the membrane and configuration. For a household that wants the cleanest possible drinking and cooking water from a single dedicated tap, nothing else in residential plumbing comes close.

It shows up in the small things, too: coffee and tea taste cleaner, ice is clear instead of cloudy, soups and sauces aren’t carrying a mineral background note, and houseplants and aquariums do better on it. Once a household has RO at the kitchen sink, bottled water almost always stops coming through the door — which, over a year, is both a cost and a plastic habit quietly retired.

A common question is whether RO water is “too stripped.” For drinking and cooking it’s perfectly healthy, and the minerals people associate with taste are easily restored with an optional remineralization stage that adds a pinch of calcium and magnesium back for a rounder flavor. We’ll set the system up the way your household prefers it, and size the storage tank so there’s always cold, clean water ready when you reach for the tap.
